Garmin Camper 895 Review - The 8-inch Motorhome and Caravan Sat Nav

The Camper 895 is, feature-for-feature, the same sat nav as the Camper 795 - same camper routing, same POI database, same guidance - but on a larger 8-inch screen instead of 7. So the real question isn't "is it good" (it is); it's "is the bigger screen worth the extra money for you?" That's what this review focuses on.
Who is the 8-inch Camper 895 actually for?
In our experience, the 895 makes sense in three situations:
- Larger motorhome cabs, where the dash sits further from the driver and a 7-inch screen can feel small at a glance.
- Drivers who find smaller screens harder to read at a distance - the bigger map and larger text genuinely help.
- Anyone who likes to see more of the road ahead and the surrounding junctions without leaning in.
If you drive a compact campervan or a car-plus-caravan, the extra size is mostly wasted and the 795 is the better-value buy. If you want to go even bigger, there's the 10-inch Camper 1095.
Specific itineraries for your vehicle's weight and size
Like the rest of the range, the Camper 895 plans routes according to the size and weight of your motorhome, campervan or caravan. Its detailed maps of Europe include the restrictions caravan and motorhome drivers face - bridge heights, weight limits, narrow roads - so the routes it gives you are ones your vehicle can actually take.
On first startup, an intuitive configurator asks you to enter your vehicle's profile (weight, size and so on). From then on it plans compatible routes and warns you of hazards along the way, such as sharp curves, tree overhang or steep hills. You can save several vehicle profiles and switch between them.
Guidance on a bigger canvas
The 895 keeps Garmin's Active Lane Guidance, indicating the correct lane for your route with bright arrows and voice prompts, plus PhotoReal junction views that show complex exits much as they look in reality. On the 8-inch screen these are simply easier to take in at a glance - which is really the whole point of the larger model.
It also carries Garmin's "Real Directions" and "Real Voice" - directions that reference landmarks ("turn right at the traffic lights") in a natural-sounding voice, rather than a robotic list of street names.
Free traffic and lifetime map updates
Map updates are free for the life of the device, downloaded over the built-in Wi-Fi without needing a computer - the same welcome policy as the rest of the camper range, and one that saves real money over the years you'll own it. Live traffic and services work through your paired smartphone via the free Garmin Drive app; there's no subscription, but you are using your phone's data connection, so keep an eye on your plan when abroad.
Campsite POIs, TripAdvisor and points of interest
The 895 comes with campsite databases from ACSI and CamperContact, and its campsite search lets you filter for the facilities you need - electric hook-up, Wi-Fi and so on. Search for nearby restaurants, shops or services and you also get TripAdvisor ratings and reviews right on the device, which is genuinely handy when you're deciding where to stop.
Hands-free calling and voice control
Say "Voice command" and the 895 shows a list of voice-activated controls - plan a route, adjust volume, change brightness - so you can keep your hands on the wheel. Pair your phone over Bluetooth and it can display notifications and read messages aloud, and handle hands-free calls through the built-in speaker (decent, though not up to a factory-fitted system).
Optional reversing camera
The Camper 895 is compatible with Garmin's wireless reversing cameras (BC30 / BC40), sold separately, which display the camera feed on-screen when you select reverse - a real bonus on the larger display.

- The larger unit takes up more windscreen/dash real estate - check it suits your cab
Garmin Camper 895: Our opinion
The Camper 895 is an easy sat nav to recommend and an easy one to explain: it's the excellent Camper 795 with a bigger, easier-to-read 8-inch screen. If you drive a larger motorhome, find smaller screens hard to read, or simply want more map in front of you, the upgrade is well worth it and you'll be very happy. If you drive something more compact or you're watching the budget, save the money and get the 795 - and if you want the biggest screen going, look at the 10-inch Camper 1095. It comes down to screen size and price, not capability.
